What was Borley Rectory?
In his 1940 bestseller, Harry Price, described Borley Rectory as,
“the most haunted house in England.”
A wealthy, eccentric family built a huge, gothic rectory in the 1860’s, for a backwater parish on the Essex and Suffolk border in England. Quickly, stories about the house and its paranormal phenomena began to flourish. A ghostly nun that was said to walk across the lawns became an integral feature of the legend. By the 1920s, Borley Rectory had begun to attract what proved to be an enduring public interest. The rectory burnt to the ground in 1939 but sightings of the ghosts and stories of the hauntings continue to be told.
